Mass Baptism Causes Excessive Sin in Waterways

Morsels Of Truth: By Bil Lepp HALFDOLLAR, WV- Rev. Lester Gwinn, a local pastor, was arrested on Monday for polluting the stream that runs behind The Church of True Believers. It would seem that a mass baptism last spring introduced so much sin into the creek that widespread corruption was caused downstream. Rev. Lester Gwinn started the church in 1984 following a medical discharged from the US Army after losing an eye in a freak corn-dog accident. Continue reading

Reflections On Last Week's Trump Rally

Morsels Of Truth: By Bil Lepp Liberals aren’t supposed to judge, but I think we West Virginians get judged as backwards, racist, gun-toting, environment hating, white, conservative Christians with little tolerance. Continue reading

Last Vet Standing: Thirty Two and A Half

Clyde Crowley got shot down over Germany on the return leg of what would have been his last bomber mission before being rotated home and, consequently, he spent the last months of World War II in the hands of the Luftwaffe. As Steven Coonts put it in Flight of the Intruder, "He logged one less landing than take-off." Continue reading

Last Vet Standing: Tom Williams - The Beginning

I start with Tom Williams.  I've made a list, and set up interviews, but Tom is the first guy I go see.  He's on his porch swing watching the last of the summer days. From the looks of him, these are the last summer days he'll see.  There is a clear plastic tube which appears under the screen door, wraps behind the table, comes up Tom's chest, circles his head once and then goes into his nose.  It will be there, he has told me, for the rest of his life. Today he has finished the last of a series of twenty injections into his belly. They are supposed to get rid of a blood clot in Tom's lung, but the oxygen will have to remain. Continue reading

Last Vet Standing: 60,000 Every Month

When you ask the question, “What is a West Virginian?,” one answer is clear: “West Virginians are soldiers.” I would wager that almost every family in West Virginia has at least one member who is currently serving in the military, or who is a veteran. Sometimes it is because of an overwhelming sense of patriotism, sometimes it because the military is the only job available. And every reason in between. Continue reading

WV Legislative Leaders Double Down To Defeat Democracy

Morsels Of Truth: By Bil Lepp Is West Virginia the only state to ever impeach its entire Supreme Court? And to do in such a way that voters don’t get a say on it for two years? Governor Justice hates bad press, and hates it when West Virginia is ranked last. Well, here’s a first Jim. Your buddies in the the legislature are possibly going to be the first state legislature to fire an entire State’s Supreme Court. Continue reading

Wouldn’t Think of It...

Morsels Of Truth: By Bil Lepp At West Virginia Strong we talk a lot about finding stories that shine a light on the values that West Virginians rely on to live a good life here. That’s a tricky task as we are a somewhat diverse people. Sorta. Continue reading

The Bright Side of Water Pollution

Morsels Of Truth: By Bil Lepp Way back in January of 2014 I stepped out of the shower at YMCA. I picked up my water bottle, which I had filled from the water fountain, and took a long drink. Then a guy says to me, “Hey, there’s been some kind of chemical spill. You’re not supposed to drink any tap water or even take showers.” Continue reading

The Plodding Plotting Parliament Asks for Overtime

Morsels Of Truth by Bil Lepp West Virginia legislators make $20,000 for the sixty day regular legislative period. That’s $333 a day.  Continue reading

Pay Up and Die Cheaply...

Morsels of Truth Several years ago I was eating supper and bit down on something hard. It felt like I had been shot in the jaw with a rusty 16 penny nail. This was at about 7:00 PM. I couldn't go to a dentist for several reasons. Dentists aren't open at 7:00 PM. Also, I did not have a dentist. I had not been to a dentist in about a decade. Which sort of explains the random exploding tooth syndrome. Continue reading
